York Cycling Club

Cycling Central PA for Fun and Fitness

Hi,

I work for The York Daily Record and I ride my bike to work.

I am putting together a story about bike commuting. If anyone has any anecdotes, or would like to contribute to my piece by allowing me to interview you, or providing contact information for someone who would like to, I would appreciate it.

I will check this post for responses, or you can email me at sreighart@ydr.com.

Thanks for any input you can give!

Stephanie

A real good article for commuting by bike. I try to commute 3-5 days out of the week to work. I was ecstatic when I saw the bike lane being installed on King St. I would probably do more errands by bike, but York is far from being a bicycle friendly community. But yet we have one of the best rail to trails trail around. It would be great if York and the state would take a cue from our neighbors in Maryland  in putting in bike lanes and maps of city. Along with the businesses installing a way of the cyclist being able to better secure their bikes while visiting their establishments. I enjoy commuting and riding my bike but I can't help to think that as I'm being passed by the motoring public, that I could be looked at as a person who is riding his bike because I lost my privilege to drive . No I chose to ride instead of driving. The city made a small step in promoting cycling but until there are more bike lanes or sharrows and an education to the motorists I'm afraid that York's dream of becoming bicycle friendly will only be a pipe dream.

Last year I was actually pulled over by a law enforcement officer for not stopping at a stop sign. The intersection was a three way stop I just reached the top of the hill where the intersection is . I did a track stand looking to my left as the street I was turning onto was a one way. I saw the policeman at the stop sign on my left. So after doing my track stand stop I started my ride at which point the officer pulled up beside me rolled the window down from the drivers seat and proceeded to lecture me on how cyclists need to obey all the traffic laws just as if you were driving your car. I'm now at the point of wanting to get a speeding ticket. I was over the 25 mph posted speed limit numerous times . Like the time on Edgar st where a motorcyclist asked me how fast does that bike go as he past me. I got a thumbs up from him as I caught up to him and rode beside him for a block. Max speed on the cyclometer that day was 29mph.

Thanks for all the help putting together my story.

I have currently posted a piece on cycle commuting at YDR's York City Limits blog. http://www.yorkblog.com/yorkcitylimits/

Check it out and let me know what you think!
